New Initiatives

1. Anganwari Food

This project was started on 1st April, 2017 by the Model Jail, Chandigarh. We are supplying food to 100 Anganwari Centres in Chandigarh & Catering to approx. 5000 Children. The Anganwari Rasoi was inaugurated by His Excellency, Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab & Administrator, UT, Chandigarh on 06.07.2017..

2. Birthday Celebration

Jail alienates an inmate from his friends, relatives and family members. To share the joy and happiness of an inmate with others, birthday of inmate is organised by Jail authorities in which apart from the other inmates Jail officials also participates. it was started in July, 2017 by the then I.G.Prisons.

3. Empowering inmates with various skills

In order to ensure that an inmate does not commit crime after completing his/her term. Various verity of vocational trainings are organised.

  • (a) Scooter repair : The inmates were imparted training in Scooter repair, trade.
  • (b) Refrigerator Repair : The inmates were imparted training in Refrigerator repair, trade.
  • (c) Plumbing : The inmates were imparted training in plumbing trade.
  • (d) Computer/Office Automation : The inmates were imparted training in Computer/office automation.
  • (e) Beauty Culture : The inmates were imparted training in beauty culture .
  • (f) Apiculture : Training in apiculture is being provided to inmates with rural farming background to increase their income through additional farming activity.
  • (g) Agro Farming : Inmates of rural farming background are also provided with training in various modern farming techniques.
  • (h) Khaad / Manure : Inmates are provided with training of vermi - compost and green manure for organic farming.

4. Candle Making

New Trade of Candle making has been started since September 2016. Candles are made by inmates for the festival season of Diwali, Gurupurab & Christmas etc.

5. Newspaper Lifafa Making

Recently Newspaper Lifafa Making unit has been started. Newspapers are sent by all the departments of chandigarh administration.

6. Gulal Making

New Trade of Harbal Gulal making has been started since march 2017. Harbal Gulal is made by inmates from the harmless and skin friendly natural ingrediants for festival of Holi.

7. Sweets & Snacks Making

Sweets like Laddoo, Petha, Besan Burfi & snacks like : Samosa, Namkeen, Mattar, Sandwich etc. are made by inmates. In addition to this channa, peanuts & Soya beans are roased and packed by jail inmates.

8. Stiching Section

Already running stiching section which was limited to the making of dresses of convict. Now it has expended its horizon to cater to the needs of fashion houses. At present inmates are stiching kurtas for khadi & village industries.

9. Momento & Commercial Furniture

Wooden replica of Open hand the symbol of "City Beautiful" Chandigarh is made by inmates of modal jail, chandigarh. In addition to this other commercial furniture like office chairs, tables, cub boards, beds & almirah etc. are made by inmates.

10. Sarthi

The Social Welfare Department in association with Burail Jail, Chandigarh started "SARTHI" a Canteen to be run by Divyangjans of Asha Kiran, Sector-46, Chandigarh. The Sarthi Kiosk was inaugurated by Mrs. Kirron Kher, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, UT, Chandigarh on 27.09.2017. The products of Burail Jail, Chandigarh would be sold by the Divyangjans at Saarthi Kiosk. The Saarthi Canteen has been launched with the aim of giving focused attention to different policy issued and keeping a meaningful trust on the activities aimed for welfare and empowerment of the persons with disabilities. Furthermore, by selling the jail products, the skills of the jail inmates will also be encouraged.

A unique programme which integrates skill of Jail inmates & rehabilitates Divyangjans in the Quest to establish them in main stream of life and to generate meaningful employment.

11. Release of Coffee Table Book

The Coffee Table Book of the Department of Prisons was launched by His Excellency, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, Chandigarh Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore. Sh. Parimal Rai, IAS, Adviser to Administrator, Sh. K.K. Jindal, IAS, Secretary Personnel,  Sh. Tejinder Singh Luthra, IPS, Director General of Police UT, Chandigarh, Dr. O. P Mishra, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh accompanined him on the dias. 

12. Food Fortification Programme

His Excellency, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, Chandigarh Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore visited the Model Jail, Chandigarh for the inauguration of Rice Fortification Machine in the Anganwari Rasoi. Sh. Tejinder Singh Luthra, IPS Director General of Police UT, Chandigarh, Dr. O. P Mishra, IPS Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh, Mrs. Samita Mankad, Principal Lead, Department of Food Safety and Standards, Delhi, Sh. K.K. Jindal, Secretary Personnel, Sh. B.L. Sharma, Secretary Social Welfare Department, Sh. Satish Kumar Jain, HCS, Addl. IG. Prisons UT, Chandigarh, Ms. Nishu Singhal, Director Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh and other officers were present on this occasion.

13. Health Screening Camp

Chandigarh Health Department in collaboration with Model Jail (Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration) UT, Chandigarh has flagged off  three days Health Cum Screening under National Health Mission Camp for Jail Bandhus at Model Jail, UT, Chandigarh from 17th to 19th January, 2018. The camp was inaugurated by Dr. O.P. Mishra, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh. Specialists from Health Department i.e. from Department of Medicine, Surgery, Gynae, ENT, EYE, Psychiatry, AYUSH and Dental examined all jail bandhus above the age of 30 years. Non Communicable Disease (NCD) risk profiling i.e. for Hypertension, Diabetes & Obesity for all jail bandhus above the age of 30 years conducted along with Oral Cancer screening. All female inmates above the age of 30 years also screened for Breast and Cervical Cancer. Health Promotional Sessions to generate awareness regarding adoption of healthy life style and to lead stress free life were emphasized. Diet Counseling regarding healthy diet was also provided during the Health Camp.

14. Creche Food

Supply to 50 crèches has been started by Prisons Department. His Excellency, Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor, Punjab & Administrator, UT, Chandigarh launches the programme by flagging of the two new Food vehicles.

15. Launching of Website of Model Jail Chandigarh

Website of Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, UT, Chandigarh is launched by His Excellency Sh. V. P. Singh Badnore, Administrator UT Chandigarh on 06.04.2018. Sh. Parimal Rai, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. Anurag Aggarwal, IAS, Home Secretary, UT Chandigarh, Sh. Tejinder Singh Luthra, IPS, Director General of Police, UT, Chandigarh, Dr. O. P. Mishra, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh and Sh. Satish Kumar Jain, HCS, Additional I. G. Prisons, UT, Chandigarh were also present on this occasion. This website has all the information regarding vocational and reformational activities being carried out inside the prisons. The main aim of showcasing these activities for the public preview is to change public perceptions regarding prisons and the acceptability of the prisoners after their release. This website also has information regarding acts & rules applicable to the Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, UT, Chandigarh and the information for the visitors. Now the visitors can know their day of visiting and timing, documentary proof for meeting etc. online. All the tenders and Press releases of the Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, UT, Chandigarh can also be accessed through this online portal. The main feature of this website is its shopping cart and Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, UT, Chandigarh has become pioneer in the field of marketing and selling products made by inmates online. Now anyone in tricity can buy products made by jail inmates online. Food and other Products above 2000 will be delivered free of cost in the tricity and products below 2000 will be levied delivery charges of Rs. 100/-. Furniture items above 5000 will be delivered free of cost in the tricity and below 2000 will be levied delivery charges of Rs. 500/-. The cost of the product is much low than the competitive market prices whereas the quality is better than the competitive market products. The Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, UT, Chandigarh is expecting the growth of sale of Jail Products through online sale and the profit earned through these activities shall be utilized for Reformation and Rehabilitation of inmates which is the sole motto of the Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, UT, Chandigarh.

16. Inauguration of Video Conference Studio

Mr. Justice Rajesh Bindal of Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh inaugurated Second Video Conferencing Studio in the Model Jail, Chandigarh on 16.10.2018. Dr. O.P. Mishra, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. Balbir Singh District and Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, Sh. Satish Kumar Jain, HCS, Addl. Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh were also present on this occasion. Hon’ble Punjab and Haryana High Court had allotted Rs. 1.75 Lakh for purchase of Video conferencing devises. Now, more number of prisoners may be produced through Video Conferencing and even trial may be conducted on case to case basis. It will not only reduce the expenditure on the transportation of prisoners to the court but it will also prevent security risks. It was informed by the IG Prisons to the Hon’ble Justice that three more Video Conferencing Studios will be set up in near future. He also added that during this year 3271 number of inmates produced in Chandigarh Courts and 401 number of inmates were produced in outside Chandigarh Courts through Video Conferencing and it saves cores of government funds.

19. Srijan- An Exclusive Showroom of Model Jail Chandigarh

The Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh inaugurated an Outlet namely ‘Srijan’ at Sector-22, Chandigarh for the sale of Jail products. This will bring creative side of inmates in the preview of the public which will increase acceptability of inmates in public as reformed citizen after their release.

20. Inauguration of Aushadhi Vatika at Model Jail Chandigarh

Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh visited the Model Jail, Chandigarh on 02.05.2019 at 5.00 PM. Dr. O.P. Mishra, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh, and Sh. Virat, HCS, Addl. I.G. Prisons were also present. He inaugurated “Aushadhi Vatika” in the jail complex near Crèche. Different varieties of Herbal/ Medicinal Plants were planted on this occasion. Clean Jail, Green Jail week was also started on this occasion. He visited the jail kitchen/ Anganwari Rasoi/ Sweet Section, Gym, Jail Dispensary, Library, Jail Factory. Trophies to the winner and runner up team of Kabaddi match were also given. Presentation on the activities undertaken in the jail were also shown to him.

21. Celebration of 5th International Yoga Day, 2019

5th International Yoga Day, 2019 was celebrated in the Model Jail, Chandigarh on 21.06.2019. The Hon’ble District & Sessions Judge, Chandigarh Sh. Balbir Singh was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Dr.  Shushil Garg, Addl. Sessions Judge, Mrs. Poonam R. Joshi, Addl. Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, Ms. Gitanjali Goel, JMIC, Chandigarh and Ms. Navneet Kaur, JMIC, Chandigarh were also present on this occasion. About 350 inmates (male & female) took part in the yoga activities under the guidance of yoga teachers of Art of Living institution. The District & Sessions Judge, Chandigarh also addressed the inmates regarding benefits of Yoga aasans in daily routine.

22. Sports Meet

National Sports Day, 2019 was celebrated in the Model Jail, Chandigarh 29th August, 2019. Both the Undertrial and Convicts took part in different games i.e Kabaddi, Tug of War, Badminton, Carom Board, Chess, Volleyball and Table Tennis. Sh. Mandip Brar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, UT, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Sh. Virat, HCS, Joint Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh welcomed the Chief Guest. Dr. Neena Chaudhary, Senor Medical Officer Jail and Sh. Amandeep Singh, DSP Jail and other staff was also present on this occasion. The sports meet was organized on the birthday of Major Sh. Dhian Chand.

           The Fit India campaign of the Govt. of India was also initiated in the Prison on 29th August, 2019. The Winners and Runner up were given cash reward and medals by the Deputy Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner appreciated very much the participation of inmates in the different games.  The winner of Kabaddi Match were given Rs. 1100/- and trophy and Runner Up Rs. 900 and Trophy, Tug of War Rs. 1100 and Runner Up Rs. 900, Volleyball winner Rs. 1100 and Runner Up Rs. 900. Similarly, the Winners of Badminton, Chess, Table Tennis and Carom Board were given Rs. 500 and Runner up Rs. 300. The inmates took part in the games with great enthusiasm. 

23. Clean Jail Green Jail

Different Varieties of ornamental/Flowers/Medicinal plants have been planted in the jail. The Jail premises and complex has been kept neat and clean under a special campaign '' Clean Jail Green Jail".

24. Artistic Work By Jail Inmates

Artistic Work has been done in Rupantran Kendra by the inmates of the jail with the help of expertise of Home Science College, Sec-10, Chandigarh. The walls of the Rupantra Kendra Have been painted with soothing Colours. We have also planned to paint other walls of the jail with soothing colours.

25. Drug De-addiction Centre Rupantran kendra Inauguration

Drug De-addiction Centre which is named as “Rupantran Kendra” has been set up in the Model Jail, Chandigarh. Sh. V.P. Singh Badnore, Hon’ble Governor, Punjab & Administrator, UT, Chandigarh inaugurated the Rupantran Kendra in the Model Jail, Chandigarh on 12.02.2020 at 11.30 AM. Sh. Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Sh. Arun Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary Home, Sh. Sanjay Beniwal, IPS, DGP Chandigarh, Sh. Omvir Singh, IPS, I.G. Prisons, Chandigarh, Sh. Mandeep Brar, IAS, DC UT Chandigarh, Mrs. Nilambari Jagadale, IPS, SSP UT Chandigarh and Sh. Virat, HCS, Joint I.G. Prisons were present on this occasion.

The Hon’ble Governor has  simultaneously inaugurated another Project called ‘Rupantran Project’ in collaboration with Psychology department of Panjab University Chandigarh. The aim of the project ‘Rupantran’ is to provide psychological counselling to the inmates and thereby transforming the lives of prisoners with an object to rehabilitate them. There will be standard operating procedure/protocol for counseling of habitual offenders. This project has multiple benefits to sensitize stake holders to factors influencing criminality, to plan prevention and anti social behaviour on the basis of results amongst habitual offenders, to help prisoners embrace  normal life by enhancing their well being and mental health.

                   The Inspector General of Prisons UT, Chandigarh welcomed the Chief Guest and apprised the ongoing works of the Jail and details about the Rupantran Kendra and Project.  

                   A musical concert was also organized on this occasion Ms. Gurleen Kaur, Vikram and Arpit of a group called Soul’ Diet. The Hon’ble Governor addressed the gathering of inmates and stated that Model Jail, Chandigarh is undoubtedly one of the best prison in India. He further stated that  any prison can have world class infrastructure and high level of cleanliness and all facilities for the inmates and the staff but the Project like Rupantran is the real work which should be executed in all the prisons not in India but around the world. He further said that this Rupantran work can be considered as “ the Soul” of any prison. This project will have positive outcome in near future. He further praises the involvement of faculty members of Panjab University and encouraged the jail administration for similar kind of visionary works in the future. He also praised the talent of Soul’s Diet group.

 Please Send one request for each prisoner in a week, duplicate requests or multiple requests may be rejected. Re-schedule of e-Mulakat is not possible due to surge of Mulakat on daily-basis. 

Note: - Undertrial prisoner have two days E-Mulakat in a week and convict prisoner have only one day E-Mulakat in a week.
