        The Model Jail, Chandigarh was established as a Sub-Jail in 1972 and later elevated to the status of Dist. Jail in 1975. In the year 1990, it bacame the Model Jail equivalent to a Centrail Jail. The total number of inmates in the prison at present is between 1100-1150. The Model Jail is equipped with latest security gadgets. Video conferencing facilities are available. Several correctional activities are being organized by the Model Jail Administration to provide skill based training for the welfare of the prisoners, so that they can be made self reliant to earn their livelihood after release from jail. The jail administration in turn recognizes their individually and provides a conducive environment and creates opportunities for them to nuture their skills and talents whilst being away from the mainstream, of the society.  

         Imparting education through literate prisoner to the illiterate prisoners and literate prisoners are being motivated to continue their further studies so that Model Jail, Chandigarh can become the first literate jail in the field of education in India. Apart from this, prisoners can also continue their higher education from IGNOU Study Center. To provide better opportunities for old age illiterate prisoners concerned departments are also involved to provide Adult Education.

         In order to keep the prison premises clean, "Shram Daan under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" is being done by the prisoners and jail staff on a fortnightly basis. From January 2022, the show "Mann Ki Baat" has been started by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Broadcast on DD National Channel, so that they can be inspired towards ideal thoughts. The cooking gas is being produced by the BIO Gas Plant in the prison department, which is used for cooking food in the prison kitchen. Barracks are named after eminent freedom fighters. Art gallery was established for better utilization of prisoner’s time where interested prisoners are getting trained in Art and making excellent painting. Better visitation environment has been provided to the prisoners and their family members with the establishment of modern meeting rooms. 

          A radio station has been set up in the jail premises, through which the prisoners will get an opportunity to highlight their hidden talent, in which poetry reading, singing art and other inspirational ideas can be provided. It can also be used as a public addressing system. 

          Since Model Jail Chandigarh is a high security level prison, and many high security prisoners have been kept here, a modern control room has been set up for proper monitoring, all sensitive areas of the jail are monitored through CCTV cameras. 

          In the jail (Rabindra Nath Tagore Library) a library has been established. There are more than eight thousand books available in the library. Prison products like sweets/snacks and food, furniture etc. are being made by the prisoners, which are being sold to the general public through the jail showroom Nav Srijan. 

          Efforts are also on to start a dedicated skill development training centre in the jail under Prime Minister Kaushal Vikash Yozna through Ministry of Skill Development, Govt. of India.
