1.What is the vision of the Prisons Department?
To provide for the safe and secure detention of the prisoners committed to Prison custody. To provide for the reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners. To provide for Basic Minimum facilities to prisoners to maintain human dignity.

2. What is the Mission of Prisons Department?
To provide minimum standard of living/treatment to the prisoners remanded to judicial custody an at the same time to reform / rehabilitate them by involving them in various vocational, spiritual,educational activities so that they become useful citizen of the country after their release.

3. What is the organization set up of Prisons Department?
The Inspector General of Prisons,Chandigarh is the Head of the Prison Department and is assisted by Addl.I.G.(Prisons). The Model Jail Chandigarh is headed by the Superintendent Jail. Deputy Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents/Welfare Officer0,Head Warders and Warders assist him. The custodial duties of the prisoners are performed by the Jail Staff where as the external security, Patrolling, search etc. are taken care by CRPF. The Chandigarh Police handles the escorting of the prisoners to the courts/hospitals etc. A Medical Officer heads the Medical Administration of the Jail. He is assisted by para-medical staff.

a. Office of The Inspector General of Prisons, Police Headquarters, Sec-9 Chandigarh.
b. Office of Superintendent, Model Jail, Chandigarh.

5. What are the working hours for office and public ?
Working hours in PHQ 9. a.m. to 5.00 p.m. – Monday to Friday Working hours for Mulakat with Prisoners 9.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.& 3:00 P.M. to 4;00 P.M. (Mulakat by relatives & friends) 4:00 PM to 5.00 PM (Mulakat with Advocate/counsels) No public meeting on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays

6. What type of services are being provided?
Safe detention and release of prisoners; wholesome and hygienic food to prisoners, arranging interviews of prisoners with their relatives/friends; education, spiritual, vocational and recreational activities for the prisoners in association with reputed NGOs; specialty and super specialty medical care to prisoners lodged in jails,crèche facilities to the children staying with female prisoners, Free Legal Aid to Prisoners Holding of Special Courts for the confessing undertrials in petty offences

7. What is the Mechanism for redressal of grievances ?
General Public can meet concerned jail Supdt., I.G. Prisons in connection with any of their grievances on all working days . Panchayats of prisoners in jail by Supdt Jail . Visit of official and non-official visitors. Monthly visit by Sessions Judge. Joint inspection by Deputy Commissioner, S.S.P and Session Judge Yearly inspection by Inspecting Judge of Hon’ble Punjab & Haryana High Court. Petitions to trial courts – prisoners can petition about their grievances.

8. How Right to Information Act is implemented in Delhi Prisons?
For Right to Information Act, 2005 Jail Supdt. is Public Information Officer for the Jail The 1st Appellant Authority is the Inspector General (Prisons) U.T. Chandigarh

9. What is the Official & Community Participation in jails?
Visit of Judges of Hon’ble Punjab & Haryana High Court. Visit of Deputy Commissioners. Visit of Session Judges. Visit of Board of Visitors. Reformation activities by various NGO’s. Visit of Members of Parliament. Visit of Senior Officers of (Prisons) of various States. Visit of Members of National Human Rights Commission . Visit of members from Media

The convicted prisoners are allowed One meeting per week and undertrial prisoners are allowed two meetings per week with friends and relatives. Additional interviews are permitted with their counsels as and when required. Special interview/meetings are also allowed in emergencies. Days of interviews are fixed alphabetically on the name of prisoner

Wednesday & Saturday   S to Z
Tuesday and Saturday   Females and HighSecurity prisoners HSP are allowed to have interview only with blood relations after Police Verification.
