WELFARE ACTIVITIES IN JAIL   

1.SPRITUAL & YOGA LECTURES:- Spiritual Programmes are being organized in the jail by the following organizations:-
i)Spiritual lectures by Brahamkumaris on every Sunday
ii)Spiritual lectures by Disciple of Sant Shri Assa Ram Bapu Ji on monthly basis.
iii)Course of Art of Living was organized in the Model Jail, Chandigarh by V.V.K.I. PUB. DIVISION, Red Cross Bhawan, Sector- 16-D, Chandigarh. This programme will be continued in the jail for the benefit of prisoners.
iv)Spiritual programme held inside the jail by Jain Muni Shri Shri Shiv Muni Ji on 2nd & 3rd May, 2007.

2.YOGA AND MEDITATION:- The inmates of Model Jail, Chandigarh are provided training in Yoga & Meditation which is beneficial for reducing stress levels. In the year, 2006 a ‘YOG SHIVER’ was organized by the Chandigarh Yog Sabha , Sec- 30, Chandigarh with the blessing of famous Yog Guru Shri LAL JI MAHARAJ.

3.RELIGIOUS ACTIVITES: - Religion has a great impact on the society and prisoners are the part of society so they are allowed to pay obeisance in Temple/Gurudwara constructed in jail premises. Prisoner celebrate different festival like Id, Diwali, Gurpurab, Christmas etc together.

4.COUNSELING:- Both male and females are provided counseling by the Sociologist/ Psychologist of NGO’s regarding social and family problems.

5.AIDS AWARENESS/COUNSELLING:- The inmates are made aware about the deadly AIDS and regular counseling from AIDS Control Society is provided. The blood tests of inmates have also been conducted for ascertaining the HIV status of the inmates. Hepatitis- B&C screening camps are also being organized.

7.RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES:- Recreational programmes are also being held in the jail for the inmates for relieving stress levels. Recently a music concert by POP singer Shankar Shawney was organized which was widely appreciated.

8.SPORTS FACILITIES:- Prisoners are provided recreational facilities in the jail such as Volley Ball, Badminton, Carrom Board and Table Tennis game has recently been introduced.
9.CABLE TV CHANNELS:- Five Religious Cable T.V. Channels are shown to the prisoners daily from 4.00 P.M. to 10.00 P.M under the orders of Punjab and Haryana High Court Chandigarh.

10.VOCATIONAL COURSES FOR INMATES:- Some of the vocational courses were started earlier which have been re-activated in collaboration with Jan Shikshan Sansthan. Two vocational Courses of refrigeration & Air Conditioning, scooter repairing and Beautician Course for female prisoner have also been started. Prisoners of Model Jail, Chandigarh have also been provided training of modern cooking methods in collaboration with Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Sector-42, Chandigarh. This skill will help the inmates to earn their livelihood and rehabilitate them after the completion of sentence.

11.KNITTING & TAILORING COURSES:- A knitting and tailoring instructor has been deputed by the Chandigarh Administration for imparting training in knitting and tailoring trades for female inmates.

12.MUSIC CLASSES:- A music teacher has been appointed by the Chandigarh Administration for music training of the jail inmates.

13.EDUCATION FACILITY:- An IGNOU study centre has been established in Model Jail Chandigarh for those inmates who want to improve their educational qualification. Adult Education is also provided to the female inmates. This facility will also be extended to male inmates very shortly.

14.LIBRARY :- A well equipped library has been set up in Model Jail, Chandigarh since 2001 where all literary, legal and other general books are made available for inmates. Besides this about 30 newspapers are also provided daily to inmates at the cost of the Chandigarh Administration.
